be strategic

Before you choose a Goal or any Objectives, take a look at the strategies below:

TAKE CARE OF YOU FIRST

  • The IEP for Home is also for you, not just your child.

  • Do you have positive relationships to draw upon?

  • Have you slept properly?

  • Are you eating on a schedule?

  • Do you feel motivated and energized?

  • Have you set time aside to take on the role of your child’s teacher?

KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO TEACH

  • Read the Content Pages.

  • Start with the first Content Page, Positive relationships. You can start elsewhere if you prefer, but know about positive relationships first.

  • Then, go through the objectives of the Content Page that you selected.

FIND A PARTNER

  • Find a mentor, confidant, coach, or guide. Tell them about the Goal and the objectives you’ve chosen to work on

  • Share your plan with your child, if you can

  • Don’t do this alone.

FOLLOW A LOGICAL ORDER

  • Build your own positive relationships first. Find a mentor, confidant, coach, or guide. Build a strong partnership with them. Then, build a positive relationship with your child

  • Build your own wellness first. Make sure you are sleeping, eating, and have control over your own screen time. Then, build your child’s wellness.

  • Have a schedule of your own that includes activities that are fun or rewarding for you. Then, set up your child’s schedule of privileges. After that, teach your child about routines and rules

  • Teach about friendships and homework fourth.

The principles above support teaching and learning. You’ll find that they are as important for you and your partner, as they are for you and your child.
